Today marks the end of a big week of dress-ups. Book week on Monday where we sent two Bluey grannies to school complete with grabber claw, beans & coins 😅. So #flannoforafarmer day was a nice easy one - I simply got dressed 😀 Charlie on the other hand was more of a ‘process’ where she needed to go through her everyday choices … unicorn, princess, fairy or unicorn-princess-fairy.

I hope the awareness of this day continues to grow and we will be behind it every time - while we know firsthand the challenges of farming - here’s what I didn’t realise…

Having a science background you can guess I love to review and reflect on pretty much everything - what went well, what can we improve on? These photos of the 24' vintage reminded me just how crazy it was. In 14 vintages I've never seen fruit undergo final ripening that fast! It was like being shot out of a canon organising logistics of our own fruit intake and the winemakers we grow for. Every vintage is so different and 2024 was a great one to challenge us and provide a few ideas on what we might put in place for next time. They say summer bodies are made in winter - well you cant plan too early for harvest either. You prune for your ideal crop, and take the season as it comes from there on in. With the vines starting to shut down now the conversation has turned to a pruning plan - what yields are we growing for next year? how many buds should we keep? what are the fruit changes we are wanting in regards to the wines we are making? And ultimately, how to clear the work schedule ready for one of my favourite jobs - a few weeks of pruning! oh and what audiobooks will I get to listen to while enjoying the beautiful and quiet vineyard to myself...

Our second vintage of Fiano has followed the success of our first, awarded 98pts from Winestate & GOLD at the 2022 Victorian Wine Show.

The sun kissed ☀ fruit of Heathcote expresses with prominent floral aromatics, rich in flavours of white stone fruit and quince, finishing in a soft, but zingy, lemon acid line🍋

As with the majority of our wines, they are crafted in a style that is not dependent on food and are interesting and pleasing to relish a glass on its own.

Tempranillo is a variety we have so much love for, and as one of the first producers of Tempranillo in the region we have long believed in its ability to thrive in Heathcote. We have a great team of people involved, our Region, our soils, everything that went right that season, and the magic that is home to thank for this one. . . Veraison is well and truly here so its the calm before the storm. This vintage has been a strange one - an abundance of rainfall right at the time you don’t want it in a vineyard (we are a fussy lot), a colder spring with late and scattered flowering, and nationwide industry destruction due to our spatting with China. Our first vintage with unsold excess grapes - the sheep might be getting a few bins to munch on (yet to check with vet but Im loathe to waste those grapes completely). So thats the situation on the ground. Yet, despite this being our hardest year yet, we are harbouring our best fruit to date and I’ve never been more excited about a vintage. Yields are down and quality is way up…Silver Lining? or cruel twist of fate? Well, its all about perspective really. I’m taking this one as a ‘gift’ - because it will always be about what greets us in the bottle, and this vintage is going to be a cracker 😉

For those of you who didn't know, we not only make Heathcote wines, we are also commercial grape growers. Due to a few changes in our industry, we have come to vintage for the first time with fruit available.

It is a consistent, quality parcel and I'm confident it will bring joy to someone who is looking for fruit.

Our 21 vintage of this fruit won Best Shiraz at the 2022 Vic Wine Show and this one is cropping even lower! I believe in this fruit quality so much I have tripled my production this year. Happy sips ahead!

The vineyard is located in the northern end of the Heathcote wine region (Corop) with the current cropping level of approx. 2t/acre (Shiraz). The vineyard is in great shape and we expect exceptional fruit quality.
