As with all our red wines, we use small batch fermentation to extract maximum colour and flavour. The 2016 Barrel Select spent 18 months in 100% new, fine-grained, French oak.
Selected in certain vintages – favourable seasonal conditions, low yields and premium oak all contribute to the depth and complexity required. We can never anticipate this wine, we must simply wait the years and see what develops. Expect Heathcote’s usual suspects – black fruits, pepper and distinct earthiness.
Heathcote terroir is sought for the unique intensity it expresses in Shiraz. Our red Cambrian soil does the talking in this full-bodied, generous Shiraz. Whilst we knew we had a fair shot at a barrel select given the season we had and the oak we invested in, the victory was in the body. These barrels gave that bit extra. The tannin was polished and smoothed aside so we could get a sense of the elevated fullness in these two wines. We have held the wine to bring it into line given its size and an extended barrel time along with a similar time ‘laydown’ ,meaning there’s 3 years under its belt and its currently drinking prime!
Brimming with pride – we offer barrels FSN16F1 and FSN16F2 – worthy of selection.
